The 2025 Cincinnati Open wrapped up on Sunday with Poland’s Iga Swiatek winning on the women’s side, and Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz winning on the men’s side. Swiatek was seeded third in Cincinnati, and Alcaraz was seeded second.

You could make the argument that Swiatek has been the world’s best female tennis player this summer. The Wimbledon champion has a record of 18 wins and two losses. The only two players to beat Swiatek were American Jessica Pegula in the final of Bad Homburg (6-4, 7-5), and Denmark’s Clara Tauson in the fourth round of the 2025 National Bank Open in Montreal (7-6, 6-3).

In Cincinnati on Monday, Swiatek showed exceptional resiliency. She was down 3-0 in the opening set to Italian Jasmine Paolini, regrouped and won 7-5, 6-4. Swiatek had eight aces compared to zero for Paolini, and broke Paolini six times in six opportunities. Swiatek beat the 28th seed Anna Kalinskaya of Russia 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals, and Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina, the ninth seed and 2022 Wimbledon champion, 7-5, 6-3 in the semifinals.

In the men’s final, Alcaraz defeated Jannik Sinner of Italy 5-0. Sinner pulled out five games into the match due to illness. This was a rematch of the French Open final (which Alcaraz won), and Wimbledon final (which Sinner won).

En route to the Cincinnati Open final, Alcaraz beat two top 10 opponents. He beat the ninth seed Andrey Rublev of Russia 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 in the quarterfinals, and the third seed Alexander Zverev of Germany 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals.

This was Alcaraz’s sixth title victory in 2025. In addition to the French Open and Cincinnati,  Alcaraz has won the Rotterdam Open, Monte Carlo Masters, Italian Open, and Queen’s Club.

Alcaraz and Swiatek have won the same Tennis Masters 1000 Series event in the same year twice before in the United States. They won the 2022 Miami Open and 2024 Indian Wells.
