Iga Swiatek of Warsaw, Poland and Carlos Alcaraz of El Palmar, Spain won the women’s singles event and men’s singles event respectively at the 2024 Indian Wells Masters 1000 Series. It was the second time in the careers of Swiatek and Alcaraz that they were victorious at this prestigious tennis tournament.

In the women’s final, Swiatek, the number one seed, steamrolled past the ninth seed Maria Sakkari of Greece, 6-4, 6-0. The first set was even as Swiatek and Sakkari played very competitive tennis. However, Swiatek won the last eight games in the match to take the title.

Swiatek saw Sakkari’s serve extremely well. Swiatek broke Sakkari five times. Another notable win for Swiatek came in round two as she beat American Danielle Collins 6-3, 6-0. Collins, the 2022 Australian Open finalist, has announced her plans to retire in 2024.

Swiatek’s prior Indian Wells win came in 2022, when she beat Sakkari in the final as well, 6-4, 6-1. In other women’s tennis news, Sakkari has named American David Witt of High Point, North Carolina her new coach. Witt was released earlier this year by Jessica Pegula.

In the men’s final at Indian Wells, Alcaraz beat Daniil Medvedev of Russia 7-6, 6-1. This was a similar match to the women’s final as Alcaraz and Medvedev were even to begin with before Alcaraz simply dominated. The crowd meanwhile got to Medvedev, who seemed unhappy they were supporting Alcaraz. You could even hear Medvedev tell one spectator to “Shut Up.”

This was the second straight year Alcaraz beat Medvedev in the Indian Wells final. The Spaniard won last year 6-3, 6-2. Among the players Alcaraz beat to reach the Indian Wells final were 2021 United States Open semifinalist Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada (6-2, 6-3 in round two), 2020 United States Open finalist Alexander Zverev of Germany (6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinals), and 2024 Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner of Italy (1-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals).
