We just discussed the difficult season for the New York Mets, and at 22 wins and 26 losses, things have not been that much better for the Miami Marlins in the National League East. However, over the last 72 hours, the Marlins and Mets have each put together an outstanding performance in an extra inning. The Marlins had eight runs in the 10th inning in a 10-5 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday. Then, the Mets had 10 runs in the 12th inning in a 16-7 win over the Washington Nationals on Monday.
In the Marlins win over the Rays, Miami set a franchise record for the most runs in a single extra inning. They scored eight runs on six hits in the tenth inning. Five of the six hits were singles. Third baseman Javier Sanoja of Maracay, Venezuela, had the biggest hit of the inning, as he recorded a three-run double.
Then on Monday night at Nationals Park in Washington, the Mets actually tied the National League record for most runs in an extra inning with 10. The previous record was set by the Cincinnati Reds in a 10-0 win over the Brooklyn Robins on May 15, 1919. The Texas Rangers have the Major League record for most runs in a single extra inning. They had 12 runs in the 15th inning in a 16-4 win over the Oakland Athletics on July 3, 1983.
In the Mets’s historic inning, they scored 10 runs on nine hits. Seven of the nine hits were singles. Meanwhile, Carson Benge and Bo Bichette each hit two-run doubles to put New York up by 10 at the time.
