According to the Associated Press on Wednesday, the New York Jets have named Aaron Glenn of Humble, Texas as their new head coach. Glenn takes over from Jets interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich of San Jose, California who was hired as the Jets temporary head coach on October 8, when the team fired Robert Saleh. Ulbrich was named the Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator this past Saturday.

Glenn spent the last four seasons as the Detroit Lions defensive coordinator. He is the second Lions assistant coach to get a head coaching job this past week. On Tuesday, the Chicago Bears named Ben Johnson of Charleston, South Carolina their new head coach. Johnson was the Lions’s offensive coordinator this past year.

This past season, the Lions gave up only 342 points. That was the fourth fewest points in the National Football Conference. Only the Philadelphia Eagles (303), Minnesota Vikings (332), and the Green Bay Packers (338) gave up less.

Prior to being the Lions defensive coordinator, Glenn was an assistant coach for the Cleveland Browns and New Orleans Saints. He was the Browns assistant defensive backs coach in 2014 and 2015, and the Saints defensive backs coach from 2016 to 2020.

Glenn played 15 seasons in the NFL as a cornerback. He was with the New York Jets from 1994 to 2001, the Houston Texans from 2002 to 2004, the Dallas Cowboys in 2005 and 2006, the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2007, and the New Orleans Saints in 2008. Three times Glenn was selected to the Pro Bowl (1997, 1998, and 2002). In 205 games, Glenn had 639 combined tackles (548 solo tackles and 91 assisted tackles), one sack, 41 interceptions for 560 yards, six interceptions for a touchdown, five forced fumbles, and seven fumble recoveries for 22 yards.
