According to Matthew Postins of Sports Illustrated on Tuesday, the New York Jets have made a coaching change. The new head coach is Jeff Ulbrich of San Jose, California. Ulbrich replaces Robert Saleh of Dearborn, Michigan, who was relieved of his coaching duties.

It has not been a good start to the season for the Jets, as more was expected with Aaron Rodgers as their starting quarterback. After five games, the Jets have a record of two wins and three losses.

New York has lost their last two games. They came up with an offensively inept performance on September 29 in a 10-9 loss to the Denver Broncos. Rodgers, who is the oldest player in the NFL, lost to a Broncos team with a rookie quarterback in Bo Nix of Arkadelphia, Arkansas. Then, the Jets went to England this past weekend, and still could not find the win column. As a result, they were beaten 23-17 to the Minnesota Vikings.

This is Ulbrich’s first head coaching job (either permanently or interim) at any level. He was an assistant special teams coordinator with the Seattle Seahawks from 2010 to 2011, the linebackers coach for five seasons with the Atlanta Falcons from 2015 to 2019, the assistant head coach, defensive coordinator and linebackers coach with the Falcons in 2020, and the defensive coordinator the last four seasons with the Jets. Ulbrich also spent three seasons as an assistant coach for the University of California-Los Angeles (better known as UCLA) at the National Collegiate Athletic Association level. With the Bruins, he was the linebackers coach and special teams coordinator.

As a player, Ulbrich spent 10 seasons with the San Francisco 49ers as a linebacker from 2000 to 2009. He had 501 combined tackles (366 solo tackles and 135 assisted tackles), 32 tackles for a loss, one safety, two interceptions for 26 yards, six forced fumbles, 5.5 sacks and two fumble recoveries. The safety came in a 50-14 49ers win over the Arizona Cardinals on December 7, 2003.
