We have been waiting for this for a while. On Monday afternoon, it finally happened. What I was referring to as “it” was the blockbuster trade that would have future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers of Chico, California be traded from the Green Bay Packers to the New York Jets.
Rodgers is now going to the cheese manufacturing center of Green Bay to the bright lights of New York City in the twilight era of his quarterbacking career. The Jets are receiving Rodgers, the Packers’s first round pick and fifth round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. The Packers are receiving a first, second, and sixth round draft pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, and another draft pick in 2024. The draft pick will be a first round pick in 2024 if Rodgers is on the football field for 65% of the Jets plays in 2023. Otherwise, the draft pick will be a second round pick in 2024 according to the Associated Press.
It has been widely speculated for a while that Rodgers would be moved to New York. A month ago we discussed that it was very unlikely that Rodgers would stay with the Packers and Lamar Jackson would stay with the Baltimore Ravens. However, the Jackson trade rumours have quieted somewhat since the Ravens signed free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.
Rodgers has literally been one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL over the last 15 years. Since 2005, he has 5001 completions in 7660 attempts for 59055 passing yards, 475 passing touchdowns and 105 interceptions. Rodgers also has had 719 rushes for 3466 rushing yards and 35 rushing touchdowns. In 2022, he had 350 passes in 542 attempts for 3695 passing yards, 26 passing touchdowns and 12 interceptions, along with 34 rushes for 94 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown.
In 2011, Rodgers was the Super Bowl MVP. He then was the NFL MVP in 2011, 2014, 2020 and 2021.
