For the sixth time in his career, Collin Morikawa of Los Angeles, California won on the PGA Tour on Sunday. He was victorious at the Zozo Championship in Tokyo, Japan. It was actually Morikawa’s first PGA title since winning the 2021 British Open. That was Morikawa’s second major title as he previously won the 2020 PGA Championship.
Morikawa posted a four-round score of -14 at the Zozo Championship. Americans Eric Cole of Palm Springs, California, and Beau Hossler of Mission Viejo, California tied for second place at -8. Last week at the Shriners Children’s Open, Cole and Hossler were both in contention. Cole was at -18, tied for third, and two strokes back of champion Joo-Hyun Kim of South Korea. Hossler was at -17, and three strokes back of Kim.
In the four rounds of play in Japan this past weekend, Morikawa had an opening round score of six-under-par 64, a second round score of three-over-par 73, a third round score of four-under-par 66, and a fourth round score of seven-under-par 63. It was interesting that Morikawa was victorious in Tokyo by six shots despite the fact he had two double bogeys. He posted a score of seven on the par-five 14th hole in round two, and then got off to a lousy start on Saturday with a score of six on the par-four first hole in round three.
Morikawa’s six-stroke win was the largest margin of victory in his career. He previously beat Americans Billy Horschel and Brooks Koepka, and Norway’s Viktor Hovland by three strokes to win the 2021 World Golf Championship Workday Championship in Bradenton, Florida. Morikawa’s other PGA Tour wins came at the 2019 Barracuda Championship and the 2020 Workday Charity Open.
