According to Alec Gearty of the New York Post on Tuesday, women’s tennis superstar Simona Halep of Constanta, Romania has been suspended four years for two doping violations. One incident occurred when she tested positive for the drug roxadusat at the 2022 United States Open, which was won by Iga Swiatek of Poland. The blood boosting drug was found in Halep’s urine.

Halep was initially suspended in October of 2022 for eight months. She has not played since the 2022 United States Open, when she lost in the first round to Ukrainian qualifier Daria Snigur, 6-2, 0-6, 6-4.

Off the court, Halep has also gone through some difficult times. In September of 2022, she divorced her husband Toni Iuruc, a Macedonian billionaire businessman, after only one year of marriage. Halep also has had numerous coaches in recent years. She has had Australia’s Darren Cahill on multiple occasions, France’s Patrick Mouratoglou, Romania’s Adrian Marcu, and Romania’s Daniel Dobre.

Halep is a two-time major champion. She won the 2018 French Open and the 2019 Wimbledon title. In 2018, Halep defeated Sloane Stephens of the United States in the French Open final, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. In 2019, Halep defeated Serena Williams of the United States in the Wimbledon final, 6-2, 6-2.

In all, Halep has won 24 WTA titles. Her last WTA title came at the 2022 Canadian Open in Toronto, where she beat Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil in the final, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. Halep will be appealing the suspension, but she will not be returning to tennis until 2026 if the suspension is upheld. The exact date where Halep is eligible to return is October 7, 2026.
