According to the Associated Press on Tuesday, Scottie Scheffler of Ridgewood, New Jersey has been named the PGA Tour Player of the Year award. In 2024, Scheffler won the award the third straight year after previously winning in 2022 and 2023. This past year, Scheffler won the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Players Championship, the Masters, the RBC Heritage, the Memorial Tournament, Travelers Championship, Olympic gold mdedal and the Tour Championship.
Most years when a player wins two majors in the same year, they automatically win the PGA Tour Player of the Year Award. However, Xander Schauffele of San Diego, California did not win the award this year even though he won the British Open and PGA Championship.
The last time and only other time a player won two majors in the same year and did not win the PGA Tour Player of the Year Award was Nick Faldo of Welwyn Garden City, England in 1990. However, one must realize Faldo was not eligible to win the PGA Tour Player of the Year Award because he was not on the PGA Tour. The majors Faldo won in 1990 were the Masters and British Open. The 1990 PGA Tour Player of the Year award winner was Wayne Levi of Little Falls, New York, who won four PGA tournaments in 1990 (the BellSouth Atlanta Golf Classic, the Centel Western Open, the Canon Greater Hartford Open, and the Canadian Open).
Only two other players have won the PGA Tour Player of the Year thrice. They are Tiger Woods of Cypress, California, who has won the award 11 times, and Rory McIlroy of Holywood, Northern Ireland, who also won thrice. Woods won in 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007. 2009, and 2013. McIlroy won in 2012, 2014, and 2019.
