Petra Kvitova of Bilovec, Czechia and Daniil Medvedev of Moscow, Russia are the women’s singles and men’s singles tennis champions of 2023. Kvitova defeated Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan 7-6, 6-2 in the women’s final, and Medvedev defeated Italy’s Jannik Sinner 7-5, 6-3 in the men’s final.

Kvitova, the 15th seed, did not face a higher ranked opponent in the tournament until she faced Rybakina, the 10th seed, in the final. In Saturday’s final, Kvitova had the more accurate serve, as she had zero double faults, while Rybakina had three. Kvitova, who won Wimbledon in 2011, and 2014, also had eight break point opportunities, of which she broke Rybakina thrice, and won a thrilling first set tiebreak, which she came through by a score of 16-14. This was Kvitova’s 30th WTA title, including her 13th title at the Premier 5/WTA 1000 level.

Medvedev, who is also a major champion, having won the 2021 United States Open, beat Sinner in a high-level final when it came to quality of play on Sunday. The rallies in the early stages of the match were simply fabulous. Medvedev was broken twice by Sinner on his serve, but was able to break Sinner four times himself.

Like Kvitova, Medvedev, who was seeded fourth, did not have to play a higher seeded opponent en route to the final. His most significant win came in the semifinals, where he beat fellow Russian, the 14th seed, and the 2022 United States Open and 2023 Australian Open semifinalist Karen Khachanov 7-6, 3-6, 6-3. This was Medvedev’s 19th ATP title, and fifth title at the ATP Masters 1000 series level. He previously won the 2019 Cincinnati Masters, the 2019 Shanghai Masters, the 2020 Paris Masters and the 2021 Canadian Open.
