One of the most intriguing battles in Super Bowl LVII will be at the quarterback position. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes of Tyler, Texas is up against Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts of Houston, Texas.
Both quarterbacks are entering the Super Bowl not at 100%. Hurts is dealing with a shoulder ailment he suffered late in the regular season. Mahomes meanwhile has a high ankle sprain he suffered in the AFC Divisional Playoff against the Jacksonville Jaguars. At this time, it looks like Mahomes’s injury is a little more serious and has the fresher injury among the two.
The shoulder did not impact Hurts in his first two playoff games. However, he was the catalyst in two Eagles playoff wins in the postseason so far. The first was in the NFC Divisional Playoff, as Philadelphia won convincingly 38-7 over the New York Giants, and the second was the NFC Championship, where the Eagles won 31-7 over the San Francisco 49ers.
In both games, the Eagles have not had to win with a prolific passing game. Hurts only had 154 yards passing against the Giants, and 121 passing yards against the 49ers. The Eagles beat the Giants because of 268 rushing yards, and beat the 49ers because of the turnover battle. San Francisco had three turnovers and Philadelphia had none.
Mahomes meanwhile still had 326 passing yards against the Bengals in the AFC Championship. In the Super Bowl expect to see more of the same as the playoffs. The Eagles will run the ball to protect Hurts’s shoulder, and the Chiefs will pass the ball to protect Mahomes’s ankle.
