For the fourth time in franchise history, and the third time since 2020, the Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl. On Sunday in Las Vegas, the Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 25-22. This Super Bowl was thrilling because the Chiefs needed overtime to win.

The Super Bowl MVP was Patrick Mahomes of Tyler, Texas. He completed 34 of 46 passes for 333 passing yards and two touchdowns. Mahomes also had nine rushes for 66 yards. Mahomes’s first touchdown catch was 16 yards to Marquez Valdes-Scantling of St. Petersburg, Florida with two minutes and 28 seconds left in the third quarter which put the Chiefs up 13-10 at the time. Mahomes’s second touchdown was three yards to Mecole Hardman of Bowman, Georgia. The second passing touchdown was the game-winning Super Bowl score, and reportedly left Hardman confused because he did not realize the Chiefs were champions until Mahomes actually told him. The NFL recently changed its playoff rules for overtime.

This was the third Super Bowl MVP for Mahomes. He was previously honoured in 2020 and 2023. In the Super Bowl from four years ago, the Chiefs also beat the 49ers 31-20. It was also the second straight year that the Chiefs won by a field goal to win the Super Bowl. Last year they beat the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35.

The Super Bowl on Sunday also had the two longest field goals in Super Bowl history. Jake Moody of Commerce, Michigan kicked a 55 yard field goal to open the scoring for the 49ers and Harrison Butker kicked a 57 yard field goal in the third quarter with five minutes and one second left in the third quarter for the Chiefs.
