According to Zephyr Melton of golf.com, three-time major champion Jordan Spieth of Dallas, Texas is missing the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson with a wrist injury, which begins Thursday from Spieth’s birthplace. As a result, there is a genuine concern that Spieth might miss the second major of the golf season, the 2023 PGA Championship. That starts next Thursday, May 18 from Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York.
The PGA Championship is the only major Spieth has not won in his career. He was previously victorious at the 2015 United States Open, the 2015 Masters, and the 2017 British Open.
Spieth has won 13 times on the PGA Tour. Of his 13 titles, two have come in the state of Texas. He was victorious at the 2016 Dean & DeLuca Invitational (now known as the Colonial National invitational) in Fort Worth by shooting -17 and beating Harris English of Valdosta, Georgia by three strokes, and then won the 2021 Valero Texas Open in San Antonio by shooting -18 and beating Charley Hoffman of San Diego, California by two strokes. Spieth’s 2021 Valero Texas Open had significance as well because it was a week before the Masters.
Currently 10th in the Official World Golf Rankings, Spieth missed only his third cut a week ago of 2023. At the Wells Fargo Championship, he was +7. Spieth also missed the cut in Honolulu in January, and the Genesis Invitational at Pacific Palisades, California. When Spieth missed the cut at the Sony Open in Hawaii he went from having the first round lead at -6 to missing the cut at +5.
South Koreans have won the last three AT&T Byron Nelson events. Sung-hoon Kang of Jeju City won in 2019, and Kyoung-hoon Lee of Seoul won in 2021 and 2022.
