According to Kevin Patra of nfl.com on Tuesday, the New York Jets have fired general manager Joe Douglas. For the short term, the Jets have named Phil Savage of Mobile, Alabama as the interim general manager.

Douglas was the Jets general manager for six seasons from 2019 to 2024. In that time the Jets posted a record of 30 wins and 64 losses in 94 games for a winning percentage of only .319.

In recent times, Douglas tried to improve the Jets roster by acquiring quarterback Aaron Rodgers in a trade with the Green Bay Packers, and acquiring wide receiver Devonte Adams in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders. However the acquisitions have not led to the most important statistic Jets fans were hoping for–victories. Since picking up Adams, the Jets have only won one of six games.

Savage has been with the Jets organization since 2019. Interestingly, that was the same time Douglas came to New York. Until Tuesday, Savage was the Jets’s senior personnel advisor.

This is actually the second time Savage has been a National Football League general manager. He was with the Cleveland Browns for four years from 2005 to 2008. In that time he was also Cleveland’s senior vice president. Savage’s first four seasons as a NFL GM was not very effective. He had a record of 24 wins and 40 losses in 64 games for a winning percentage of .375.

Prior to being the Browns GM, Savage was Cleveland’s college scout and national scout from 2003 to 2005. Savage was also with the director of college scouting and director of player personnel with the Baltimore Ravens from 1996 to 2004, and the player personnel consultant and player personnel executive with the Philadelphia Eagles from 2010 to 2012.
