Dustin Johnson returns to number one in the official world golf rankings

Dustin Johnson of Columbia, South Carolina, is back at number one in the Official World Golf Rankings after a spectacular performance at TPC Boston that has captured the global golf conversation by storm. What Johnson was able to accomplish to begin the 2020 FedEx Cup Playoffs at the Northern Trust, was downright mind-boggling, to say the least.

Johnson’s score over four rounds was -30. That is correct. You read that right. It was the second-best overall score in PGA Tour history. The only other player who had a better tournament score was South Africa’s Ernie Els, who had a -31 when he won the 2003 Mercedes Championship in Maui.

No one was even close to Johnson’s -30 this past weekend. He won by 11 strokes with Harris English of Valdosta, Georgia finishing in second place at -19. In the four rounds, Johnson had scores of 67, 60, 64, 63. Remarkably, Johnson’s score of 60 in round two was not the lowest round of the tournament. That is because Scottie Scheffler of Dallas, Texas became the 12th player in PGA history to record a score lower than 60, as he shot a 59.

This was Johnson’s 22nd career win and fifth win in the FedEx Cup Playoffs. He previously won at the 2010 BMW Championship in Chicago, the 2011 Barclays in New Jersey, the 2016 BMW Championship in Indianapolis, and the 2017 Northern Trust in Buffalo.

Johnson also becomes the fifth golfer this year to be ranked first in the world. He follows Brooks Koepka of West Palm Beach, Florida; Rory McIlroy of Holywood, Northern Ireland; Jon Rahm of Barrika, Spain; and Justin Thomas of Louisville, Kentucky.

This was also the sixth time that Johnson has been ranked number one. All times have come since February 19, 2017.
