According to the Associated Press on Thursday, the Miami Dolphins have signed tight end Jonnu Smith of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At this time we know that the length of the contract is for two years, but we do not know any of the financial details.

Smith becomes the second tight end to change teams this week. On Wednesday, the Washington Commanders signed Zach Ertz of Orange, California to a one-year deal worth $5 million.

The Dolphins will be Smith’s fourth National Football League franchise. He has previously played four seasons with the Tennessee Titans from 2017 to 2020, two seasons with the New England Patriots from 2021 to 2022, and one season with the Atlanta Falcons in 2023.

This past season with the Falcons, Smith had 50 catches for 582 receiving yards and three touchdowns. However, one must realize that Smith was sharing time with Kyle Pitts of Philadelphia. Pitts had 53 catches for 667 yards and three touchdowns.

Smith’s most notable game in 2023 came on November 5. That is when he had five catches for 100 yards and a touchdown in a 31-28 Falcons loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

The Dolphins were in a need to improve their tight end position. Last year the Dolphins most productive tight end was Durham Smythe, who ironically like Smith and Pitts, came from Philadelphia. However, Smythe only had 35 catches for 366 receiving yards and did not find the end zone all season long. Smythe’s most productive game with the Dolphins came on Christmas Eve in a 22-20 Miami win over the Dallas Cowboys. Smythe had five catches for 56 receiving yards.
