According to the Canadian Press on Thursday, the Carolina Panthers have selected quarterback Bryce Young of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania first overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. He played his collegiate football at the University of Alabama, where he had an outstanding career, with arguably the most famous football program in the history of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
Young’s most memorable season came in 2021 when he won the Heisman Trophy. He completed 367 passes in 548 attempts for 4872 passing yards, 47 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. Young also had three rushing touchdowns.
In Young’s three-year Crimson Tide career, he completed 624 passes in 949 attempts for 8356 passing yards, 80 passing touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Young also had 162 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns.
The Panthers meanwhile acquired the first overall pick in a blockbuster deal with the Chicago Bears on March 10. Draft picks were mostly involved, however, wide receiver D.J. Moore went from Carolina to Chicago. Ironically, like Young, Moore is a native of Philadelphia.
Young is expected to be the latest Panthers starting quarterback in what has turned out to be a gigantic Panthers quarterback carousel in recent years. Since 2018, the Panthers have tried Cam Newton, Kyle Allen, Teddy Bridgewater, Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield.
The fact that the Panthers went after a starting quarterback was not a huge surprise. That is because Darnold signed a one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers worth $4.5 million on March 14.
Young was one of three quarterbacks taken in the first five picks. The Houston Texans picked C.J. Stroud second overall out of Ohio State and the Indianapolis Colts picked Anthony Richardson fourth overall out of Florida.
