For the fourth time in his career, Carlos Alcaraz of El Palmar, Spain is a major champion. After winning the 2022 United States Open, the 2023 Wimbledon, and 2024 French Open, Alcaraz won Wimbledon for the second straight year on Sunday. In the final, the third seed, defeated the second seed, Novak Djokovic of Belgrade, Serbia 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 in one hour and 17 minutes.

One major difference in the match was the fact that Alcaraz had 14 break point opportunities, while Djokovic only had three. Alcaraz broke Djokovic five times, while Djokovic only broke Alcaraz once. Interestingly, the only time Djokovic broke Alcaraz was in the third set when Alcaraz was serving for the match. Djokovic got back on serve, and eventually forced a tie-break, before Alcaraz won the third set tie break 7-4.

Alcaraz became the fifth male player in the Open Era since 1968 to win the French Open and Wimbledon in the same year. He follows Rod Laver of Rockhampton City, Australia who won all four major titles in 1969, Sweden’s Bjorn Borg, who accomplished the feat three years in a row from 1978 to 1980, Spain’s Rafael Nadal in 2008 and 2010, and Djokovic in 2021.

Djokovic has been on an impressive streak himself. He has reached six consecutive Wimbledon finals. Djokovic won four straight Wimbledon titles in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022, before losing to Alcaraz the last two years.

This is Alcaraz’s 15th ATP title. In 2024, he has now won three tournaments on three different surfaces. In addition to winning Wimbledon on grass and the French Open on clay, Alcaraz won Indian Wells on hard court in March.
