Yuka Saso leads after first round of the 2024 United States Open

Yuka Saso of Japan is the leader after the first round of the 2024 United States Women’s Open in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. On Thursday, Saso shot a score of two-under-par on a day where players had difficulty figuring out the wind, and a day where the golf course completely beat the players. Only four players of 156 players in the field posted scores under par and 20 players had scores of +10 or worse.
Saso is a major champion from the past as she won the 2021 United States Women’s Open while representing her home country of the Philippines. She posted a score of -2 as she had five birdies and three bogeys. Saso birdied the second, fourth, seventh, 15th and 16th holes, and bogeyed the fifth, ninth and 18th holes.
There is a three-way tie for second place. Those one stroke back at -1 are Andrea Lee of the United States, Wichanee Meechai of Thailand and French amateur Adela Cernousek, who won the NCAA Championship this year while representing Texas A&M.
Ten players are tied for fifth at even par. There you can find two-time major champion Minjee Lee of Perth, Australia (2021 Evian Championship and 2022 United States Women’s Open), 2020 Women’s PGA Championship winner Sei Young Kim of South Korea, three American amateurs (Megan Schofill, Catherine Park and Asterisk Talley), Japan’s Chisato Iwai and Yuri Yoshida, Germany’s Alexandra Forsterling, South Korea’s Jenny Shin, and Slovenia’s Pia Babnik.
Seven more players are +1 and three strokes back. Those tied for 15th are Canada’s Maude-Aimee Leblanc, American Mariel Galdiano, South Korea’s Soo Bin Joo, South Africa’s Casandra Alexander, and three Japanese golfers (Yui Kawamoto, Hinako Shibuno, and Ayaka Furue). Shibuno is a major champion as she won the 2019 Women’s British Open.
