Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay combine for a score of 59 on the PGA Tour

In the history of the PGA Tour, we have seen 11 golfers post a score of 59. On Thursday, in the first round of the 2022 Zurich Classic of New Orleans, reigning Olympic gold medalist Xander Schauffele and reigning FedEx Cup champion Patrick Cantlay teamed up to post a score of 59 in the four-ball format. It was the best score ever in the history of the tournament.

On Thursday, Cantlay had a score of -7, while Schauffele was at -6 for a score of -13 overall. Both golfers did not have a bogey on their entire round. Cantlay eagled the second hole, before notching birdies on the fourth, fifth, 10th, 17th, and 18th holes. Schauffele, meanwhile birdied the first, seventh, eighth, 11th, 12th, and 16th holes.

There was a lot of low scoring on Thursday. Americans Taylor Moore and Matthew NeSmith teamed up to post a score of 60, as they are at -12. Three more teams are at -11, while three more teams are at -10.

What makes the Zurich Classic of New Orleans so unique is that it is a team event. It is frequent for golfers from the same countries to join forces. The defending champions are Australians Marc Leishman and Cameron Smith, who posted a combined score of -20 last year to beat the South African duo of Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel in a playoff. Oosthuizen and Schwartzel are both major champions from over a decade ago, as Oosthuizen won the 2010 British Open by seven strokes over England’s Lee Westwood, while Schwartzel won the 2011 Masters by two strokes over Australians Jason Day and Adam Scott.
