WTA names Iga Swiatek 2023 Player of the Year

According to the Associated Press on Monday, Iga Swiatek of Warsaw, Poland has been named the 2023 WTA Player of the Year. The 22-year-old won the French Open in 2023. It was the fourth grand slam title of her career, as she previously won the French Open in 2020, the French Open in 2022, and the United States Open in 2022.

At the French Open, Swiatek beat Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic in three sets, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. The second set in the final was the only set she lost in seven French Open matches. Swiatek’s most dominant match came in the third round, where she bageled her opponent, Xin Wang of China, 6-0, 6-0.

Swiatek’s other WTA titles in 2023 came at the Qatar Open on February 18, where she beat Jessica Pegula of the United States, 6-3, 6-0 in the final; at the Stuttgart Grand Prix on April 23, where she beat Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, 6-3, 6-4 in the final; at the Poland Open on July 30, where she beat Laura Siegemund of Germany, 6-0, 6-1 in the final; at the China Open on October 8, where she beat Liudmila Samsonova of Russia, 6-2, 6-2 in the final; and at the WTA Finals on November 6, where she clobbered Pegula, 6-1, 6-0 in the final. By winning the WTA Finals, Swiatek regained the world number one spot. She had a record of 68 wins and 11 losses in 2023.

When Swiatek was named the 2022 WTA Player of the Year, she won eight titles. She is the first player to win the award in back-to-back years since Serena Williams accomplished the feat in 2015. Williams actually won four straight years from 2012 to 2015.
