According to Doug Ferguson of the Associated Press, the World Golf Hall of Fame is moving from St. Augustine, Florida to Pinehurst, North Carolina. The museum was actually initially in Pinehurst when it first opened in 1974 and then moved into its current facility in Florida on May 19, 1998.

Players inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame have won either two major titles (Players Championship included on the men’s side) or 15 career titles on approved tours. The men’s approved tours are the PGA Tour, European Tour, Japan Golf Tour, Sunshine Tour, Asian Tour, and PGA Tour of Australasia. The women’s approved tours are the LPGA Tour, the Ladies European Tour, the LPGA of Japan Tour, the LPGA of Korea Tour and the WPGA Tour of Australasia.

One strong supporter of the World Golf Hall of Fame over the years is Gary Player. The 86-year-old from Johannesburg, South Africa won nine major titles from 1959 to 1978. Player was one of the initial inductees, alongside Walter Hagen, Ben Hogan, Bobby Jones, Byron Nelson, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Francis Ouimet, Gene Sarazen, Sam Snead, and Harry Vardon.

It is interesting that even though members have been inducted once every two years from 2013 to 2021, there has not been a ceremony since 2013. That is when Ken Venturi, Fred Couples, Willie Park Jr., Ken Schofield and Colin Montgomerie were inducted.

Pinehurst has hosted four United States Open men’s championships in the past and one United States Open women’s championships. They include the 1936 PGA Championship (won by American Denny Shute), the 1999 U.S. Open (won by Payne Stewart of the United States), the 2005 U.S. Open (won by Michael Campbell of New Zealand), the 2014 United States Open (won by Martin Kaymer of Germany) and the 2014 United States Women’s Open (won by American Michelle Wie).
