Women’s tennis final set for the 2020 Olympic Games

The women’s finalists in tennis are set for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021. On Saturday, Belinda Bencic of Switzerland will face Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic in the championship final. Bencic beat the 15th seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan in one semifinal, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3, while Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic beat the fourth seed, Elina Svitolina of the Ukraine 6-3, 6-1 in the other semifinal.
During an Olympic tournament not attended by Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka, it is Belinda Bencic who is representing Switzerland in the women’s final. Bencic, who has won four times on the WTA Tour in the past (twice in 2015 and twice in 2019) is looking for the biggest win of her tennis career. Bencic’s previous titles were the 2015 Eastbourne Invitational and 2015 Canadian Open, along with the 2019 Dubai Championship and 2019 Kremlin Cup.
Bencic is also known for reaching the 2019 United States Open semifinal. There she lost to the eventual champion, Bianca Andreescu of Canada, 7-6, 7-5.

Vondrousova meanwhile, is known for another dream run at a major championship. In 2019, Vondrousova went all the way to the French Open final where she lost to Australia’s Ashleigh Barty, 6-1, 6-3. At the 2020 Olympic Games in 2021, Vondrousova made headlines for being the player to knockout home country favourite Naomi Osaka of Japan, 6-1, 6-4 with ease in the third round. In an Olympic tennis tournament where we expected to see Osaka as the last Japanese player left, we actually saw a longer and more productive run from Kei Nishikori, who reached the quarterfinals in the men’s tournament.
Head-to-head Vondrousova won her only prior meeting against Bencic. That came in the third round of the Miami Open, which Vondrousova won 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
