Wizards win in San Antonio for the first time since 1999

For the first time in 24 years, the Washington Wizards won a National Basketball Association game in San Antonio on Monday. Third year small forward Deni Avdija of Beit Zera, Israel led the Wizards in scoring with 25 points in a 127-106 win over the Spurs.
The 25 points for Avdija were a career-high, impressive when you consider the fact he came off the bench for Washington in the 21-point rout. Avdija’s previous career-highs were 21 points. He accomplished the feat first in a 100-97 Wizards win over the Detroit Pistons on March 25, 2022, and again in a 102-92 Wizards win over the Memphis Grizzlies on November 13, 2022.
The last time the Wizards won in San Antonio was on December 10, 1999, as the Wizards were victorious 99-89. In that game, Mitch Richmond of Fort Lauderdale, Florida led the Wizards in scoring with 31 points, while Michael Smith of Washington, District of Columbia, had a double-double as he had 10 points and 15 rebounds. Ironically, it was 1999 that the Spurs won their first of five NBA Finals in franchise history.
On Monday, it was the Wizards’s first win in San Antonio in 8451 days according to Jack Maloney of CBS Sports. In that time, the Spurs had a 22-game winning streak over the Wizards in San Antonio.

In addition to Avdija, six other Wizards had multi-point games. Bradley Beal of St. Louis, Missouri had 21 points, Kristaps Porzingis of Liepaja, Latvia had 17 points, Kyle Kuzma of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania had 16 points, Corey Kispert of Edmonds, Washington had 14 points, Kendrick Nunn of Chicago, Illinois had 12 points, and Monte Morris of Grand Rapids, Michigan had 11 points.
The Wizards have now won six straight games, and have a record of 24 wins and 26 losses. That is good enough for ninth place in the Eastern Conference. The Spurs are at 14 wins and 37 losses, and have lost six straight games.
