Wizards trade Chris Paul to Warriors for Jordan Poole

According to Brad Botkin of CBS Sports on Thursday, the Washington Wizards and Golden State Warriors made a significant trade. The Warriors traded point guard Chris Paul of Winston-Salem, North Carolina to the Golden State Warriors for guard Jordan Poole of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a first round pick in the 2030 NBA Draft and a second round pick in the 2027 NBA Draft.

This is the second time in a week that Paul has been traded. He was initially traded on Sunday from the Phoenix Suns to the Wizards in a deal that involved Bradley Beal. In 2022-23 with Phoenix, Paul averaged 13.9 points per game, 8.9 assists per game, 4.3 rebounds per game, and 1.5 steals per game. He had a field goal percentage of .440, three-point percentage of .375, and a free throw percentage of .831.

By going to Golden State, it will be interesting to see what Paul’s role will be. He is a natural point guard, but the Warriors already have Stephen Curry, who is possibly the best point guard in NBA history. At 38 years of age, expect Paul to play more a reserve role, average about 10 to 15 minutes a game, and help keep Curry fresh as much as possible.

The fact that Poole was traded by the Warriors, should not be a huge surprise because he and Draymond Green could not co-exist after getting into a high profile fight in training camp last year. It should be noted that new Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. wants to keep Green. Last season, Poole averaged 20.4 points per game, 4.5 assists per game, and 2.7 rebounds per game. He had a field goal percentage of .430, three-point percentage of .336, an a free throw percentage of .870.
