Why NBA Summer League is not worth watching
8 months ago - Sportingbase
The NBA Summer League is taking place at the moment in Las Vegas. If you are wondering why I have not reported on the event, there is a reason. This is exhibition play, and this week there are two major championships in golf and tennis that have sparked my interest significantly more.
The bottom line is the NBA regular season begins in October and ends in April. We then have two months of exciting playoff play. When the postseason is over, I have zero interest in watching NBA basketball until the regular season starts up again for the following season.
That is not to say I don’t watch basketball. I just watched the 3×3 Basketball World Cup in Mongolia this past month. What an exciting tournament? We saw the globalization of basketball to a whole new level as the host Mongolians won a silver medal on the women’s side. Congratulations to the Netherlands and Spain for winning the gold medal on the women’s side and men’s side respectively. It was also interesting that the United States, the country known for its international basketball dominance, did not win a medal at all.
The reason why the 3×3 Basketball World Cup was worth watching and the NBA Summer League is not is because the games mattered. Does anyone care that the Thunder beat the Grizzlies in Summer League? I didn’t think so. Furthermore, I can wait and see first overall pick Cooper Flagg in a Dallas uniform once the season actually starts. Finally, I would also be holding my breath and hoping that the players on my favourite teams did not get hurt.
