Why Eagles wide receiver Devon Allen may forgo part of the NFL preseason

It appears that Devon Allen of Phoenix, Arizona may soon have a difficult decision to make. The elite multi-sport athlete may be missing part of the 2023 National Football League preseason because he is considered a medal contender at the 2023 International Association of Athletics Federations World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

This past weekend, Allen won the silver medal in the men’s hurdles at the United States of America Track and Field Grand Prix in New York City with a time of 13.04 seconds. More impressively, it was the fourth fastest time run by a hurdler in 2023. Allen placed only behind gold medalist Daniel Roberts of Atlanta, Georgia, who had a time of 13.01 seconds.

Only two other hurdlers besides Roberts and Allen have ran a faster time this year, and they are also both American. Ironically, the fastest hurdler of 2023 is Cordell Tinch, who happens to call Green Bay, Wisconsin home. There is no doubt that Green Bay is more known for the Green Bay Packers then track and field. Tinch had a time of 12.96 seconds in winning the Trackwired Arkansas Grand Prix in Fayetteville, Arkansas on June 23. Grant Holloway of Chesapeake, Virginia had the second fastest time of 12.98 seconds from an event in Paris on June 9.

However, before Allen competes for the United States at the World Championships, he needs to qualify for the United States first. He must finish in the top three at the 2023 United States Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon from July 6-9. It should be noted that Allen’s personal best hurdles time was 12.84 seconds set at the 2022 New York Grand Prix.
