Was Andy Murray a smart hire for Novak Djokovic?

There was significant tennis news on Tuesday, as Novak Djokovic parted ways with coach Andy Murray. Djokovic first hired Murray prior to the 2025 Australian Open, but the results have been mixed. He did not win a tournament, but did have two notable runs in prestigious tournaments. Djokovic reached the semifinals of the Australian Open (where he beat Carlos Alcaraz of Spain in the quarterfinals) and then reached the finals of the Miami Open before losing to Jakub Mensik of the Czech Republic.

However, Djokovic also has two three-match losing streaks in 2025, and did not look like the dominant self we have known throughout his career. Is it a case that Father Time is finally catching up to the 24-time grand slam champion and one of the greatest players of all-time? The answer is, it looks like it. Where Djokovic was marvelous in his prime was his return of serve. In his last three losses, he has only broken his opponent once in each match.

Djokovic obviously trusted Murray as his coach. However, Murray lacked one important quality. That was coaching experience, a quality that comes with time. It would have been interesting to see how much better Djokovic could have been if Murray had coached him in his prime.

The timing is also interesting. That is because it came prior to the grass court season, the surface Murray had his most success as it was on grass where he won Wimbledon twice. Now Djokovic will be looking for a new coach. It will be interesting to see if he makes a decision before the French Open.
