Warriors name Mike Dunleavy Jr. as their new general manager

According to Matthew Winick of The Score, the Golden State Warriors have named Mike Dunleavy Jr. of Fort Worth, Texas as their new general manager on Friday. Dunleavy Jr. replaces Bob Myers of Danville, California, who resigned on May 30. 

Dunleavy Jr. has been in a non-paying role with the Warriors since September 24, 2018. He was initially a scout, and then promoted to assistant general manager on August 29, 2019. Dunleavy Jr.’s most recent role with the Warriors was vice president of basketball operations. That position he has had since September 30, 2021.

As a player, Dunleavy Jr. was a small forward. He was drafted by the Warriors in the first round, third overall, in the 2002 NBA Draft. Dunleavy Jr. was selected only behind Yao Ming, who was drafted by the Houston Rockets, and Jay Williams, who was drafted by the Chicago Bulls. Interestingly, both Williams and Dunleavy Jr. played for the prestigious Duke University.

Dunleavy Jr. played 986 games from 2002 to 2017. He was with the Warriors from 2002 to 2007, the Indiana Pacers from 2007 to 2011, the Milwaukee Bucks from 2011 to 2013, and the Chicago Bulls from 2013 to 2016. In Dunleavy Jr.’s final NBA season he shared his time with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Atlanta Hawks.

From a statistical perspective, Dunleavy Jr. averaged 11.2 points per game, 4.3 assists per game, and 2.2 assists per game. He had field goal percentage of .441, three-point percentage of .377, and a free throw percentage of .803.

The Warriors’s nucleus is filled with veterans. The team is obviously centered around Stephen Curry, who is the greatest three-point shooter in NBA history.
