Reece Walsh is set to re-sign with the Broncos on a massive $5.5 million deal that will instantly make the young fullback dynamo the highest-paid player to have ever represented the Brisbane glamour club.

Outside the slice of Broncos history, the mouthwatering deal also makes Walsh the NRL’s youngest star on at least a million a season.

There was never really any question that Walsh would be staying in Brisbane, especially with his ex-partner still living in the Queensland capital with his daughter, but the Broncos powerbrokers were still very eager to tie the 21-year-old down as quickly as possible—and, with an eye to the future, for as long as possible as well.

Early reports, which first came out via News Corp, suggest Walsh has signed through to at least the end of 2029. He will now earn around $1.1 million a season while at Red Hill.

The Sporting Base heard some clubs were even preparing bids as big as $1.3 million a year. Things will never get to that stage now, however, with Walsh pledging himself to the project in Brisbane.

The Broncos were helped on to the bid after several offseason departures that cleared up the salary cap somewhat, including Herbie Farnworth, Thomas Flegler, and Kurt Capewell all leaving. Walsh’s signature all but locks down the core spine, with Adam Reynolds just recently extending his stay a year and Ezra Mam agreeing to a similar huge extension that means the five-eighth now renowned for his grand final performance is staying until 2028.

Walsh is actually sidelined at the moment following a rather nasty head clash while playing the Penrith Panthers, but he’s expected to make a speedy return to play in coming weeks.
