Viktor Hovland, Corey Conners & Scottie Scheffler lead at PGA Championship

There is a three-way tie of golfers from three different nations after the second round of the 2023 PGA Championship. Tied for the lead at -5 are Canada’s Corey Conners, Norway’s Viktor Hovland and American Scottie Scheffler.

Of the three in the lead, only Scheffler has won a major before. That came at the 2022 Masters when Scheffler shot a four-round score of -10 and beat Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy by three strokes.

There are four more golfers in contention. Americans Justin Suh and Bryson DeChambeau are tied for fourth place at -3, and only two stroke back of the leaders. Then at -2 are American Brooks Koepka and England’s Callum Tarren.

Of the four golfers trying to catch the leaders are two major champions. They are DeChambeau and Koepka. DeChambeau won the 2020 United States Open, while Koepka won the 2017 and 2018 United States Open, and the 2018 and 2019 PGA Championship.

On Friday in round two, Scheffler, the world number two and our pick to win the PGA Championship, had four birdies and two bogeys. He had birdies on the first, second, 14th, and 15th holes, and bogeys on the seventh and 18th holes. Scheffler did not have one single bogey in round one.

Hovland was three under par on Friday. He had four birdies and one bogey. Hovland’s birdies came on the first, second, 10th and 18th holes, and his bogey was on the third hole. During his round, Hovland had stretches of six straight pars on the front nine, and seven straight pars on the back nine.

Conners, like Scheffler was two-under-par on Friday after being three-under-par on Thursday. Conners’s birdies came on the second, 13th, and 15th holes, while his bogey came on the seventh hole. Conners at one point reached -6 and had a two stroke lead on Scheffler before dropping a shot when he bogeyed the seventh hole. To keep in mind, the front nine is tending a play a little bit more difficult than the back nine. In round two, most of the leaders started on the first hole. However, Conners started on the 10th hole.
