Two high seeded Americans knocked out of first round of 2025 French Open

The first round of the 2025 French Open is now in the books, and one of the top stories is the fact that two Americans ranked in the top 10 (one man and one woman) have already been eliminated. On Monday, Daniel Altmaier of Germany, the 66th ranked player in the world, knocked out the world number four and 2024 United States Open finalist Taylor Fritz of Rancho Santa Fe, California.  Also on Monday, world number nine and 2024 United States Open semifinalist Emma Navarro of New York City, was beaten by Jessica Bouzas Maneiro of Spain.

Altmaier came through with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 win. Altmaier won 65% of his points on his second serve (compared to only 48% for Fritz). Altmaier also broke Fritz five times in eight opportunities. This is actually the third time in the last six years that Altmaier has beaten a top  10 player at the French Open. In the third round of the 2020 French Open, Altmaier stunned the eighth seed, Matteo Berrettini of Italy, 6-2, 7-6, 6-4. Then in the second round of the 2021 French Open, Altmaier beat the ninth seed, Jannik Sinner of Italy, 6-7, 7-6, 1-6, 7-6, 7-5.

Bouzas Maneiro, meanwhile, was spectacular against Navarro. The 68th ranked player only lost one game in the entire match in a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Bouzas Maneiro broke Navarro seven times in 15 opportunities. Navarro only won 28% of her second serve points. This was Bouzas Maniero’s second career win over a top 10 opponent. She upset Marketa Vondrousova 6-4, 6-2 in the first round of Wimbledon in 2024.

Next up for Altmaier is Vit Kopriva of the Czech Republic. Meanwhile, Bouzas Maneiro will play American Robin Montgomery in round two.
