Two game-winning NBA buzzer beaters in February

The biggest news in the NBA lately have obviously been the remarkable blockbuster trades, but there have also been exceptional performances on the basketball court too. Twice this month teams have won by a game-winning buzzer beater.

On February 1, Miami Heat center Bam Adebayo of Newark, New Jersey had the game-winning shot in a 105-103 win over the San Antonio Spurs. Adebayo’s two point field goal, which broke a 103-103 tie, was 19 feet from Heat power forward Nikola Jovic of Serbia.

For Adebayo it was his third career buzzer beater. He also accomplished the feat on April 18, 2021 in a 109-107 Heat win over the Brooklyn Nets and on March 17, 2024 in a 104-101 Heat win over the Detroit Pistons.

Then on February 5, Cleveland Cavaliers guard Darius Garland of Gary, Indiana made a 31-foot three point shot to beat the Detroit Pistons 118-115. At the time the Pistons had all the momentum as moments before Cade Cunningham tied the game at 115 with three free throws made. When Garland delivered the shot, his feet were on the Pistons logo at center court.

Garland’s 31 foot buzzer beater was the second longest buzzer beater this season. The longest was 49 feet by Atlanta Hawks point guard Trae Young of Lubbock, Texas in a 124-121 Atlanta win over the Utah Jazz on January 7.

The Cavaliers have the best record in the Eastern Conference this season at 43 wins and 10 losses for a fantastic winning percentage of .811. They have a five and a half game lead over the second place Boston Celtics, who are at 38 wins and 16 losses.
