The fourth and final major of the 2021 golf season is about to get underway from the Royal St. George’s Golf Club in Kent, England. This past weekend when Lucas Glover won the John Deere Classic, the bigger story seemed to be all of the withdrawals at the 2021 British Open. So far they include high-profile names Hideki Matsuyama, Bubba Watson, David Duval, Kevin Na, Zach Johnson, and Matthew Wolff. Matsuyama and Johnson have withdrawn because they have coronavirus. Here are five intriguing threesomes over the first two days.

5) Xander Schauffele/Rickie Fowler/Robert MacIntyre–All three golfers in this group have had solid performances in a major already in 2021. Schauffele finished tied for third at the Masters after shooting -7. Fowler was eighth at the PGA Championship (-1), while MacIntyre was 12th at the Masters after shooting a -2. MacIntyre might be the least well-known name of this group, but he did win on the European Tour back in November in Cyprus.

4) Justin Rose/Dustin Johnson/Will Zalatoris–Unable to defend his Olympic gold medal because he was behind Tommy Fleetwood and Paul Casey among British golfers in the world rankings, Justin Rose will now have to focus on the fourth and final major of the year. He is with 2020 Masters champion Dustin Johnson, and American phenom Will Zalatoris, who finished second to Matsuyama at the Masters back in April.

3) Rory McIlroy/Patrick Reed/Cameron Smith–In this group, you have Australia’s current number one who is getting ready for the Olympic Games, four-time major champion McIlroy, and Reed, the 2018 Masters champion. One of McIlroy’s four majors was the 2014 British Open.

2) Jordan Spieth/Bryson DeChambeau/Branden Grace–This group is interesting as you have three-time major champion Jordan Spieth, the 2020 United States Open champ Bryson DeChambeau, and Branden Grace of South Africa, who has six top-10 finishes at majors. Of Spieth’s three major titles was the 2017 British Open.

1)Louis Oosthuizen/Shane Lowry/Jon Rahm–This group has three major champions. Oosthuizen of South Africa won the 2010 British Open, Lowry of Ireland won the 2019 British Open, and Rahm of Spain won the 2021 United States Open. It has been a great year for Oosthuizen as he was second at the U.S. Open and PGA Championship.
