Top five storylines from Week 3 of the NFL season

The third week is now in the books in the National Football League. Here are five of the top storylines.

5) Denver Broncos beat the San Francisco 49ers 11-10.

If you thought this scoreline was a tad strange, you would not be the only one. The 11-10 final score was only the second time in NFL history a team won by that scoreline. The first time came on November 16, 2008 as the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the San Diego Chargers. With the win, the Broncos are in a first place tie in the AFC West with the Kansas City Chiefs. In a Sunday shocker, the Chiefs were upset 20-17 by the Indianapolis Colts.

4) Dolphins move into first place in the AFC East.

Heading into week three, the Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills were both undefeated at 3-0. Now it is just Miami. On Sunday, the Dolphins beat the Bills 21-19. Miami won despite having 16 fewer first downs, 283 fewer yards, and being on the field for 21 minutes and 20 seconds less than their opponent. The Dolphins won because of better discipline, as they committed only four penalties for 20 yards, while the Bills had seven penalties for 52 yards.

3) Cooper Rush undefeated as a starter in Dallas.

No Dak Prescott in Dallas. No problem. Cooper Rush has filled in admirably. On Monday night, Rush improved to 3-0 as a starting quarterback for the Cowboys in a 23-16 win over the New York Giants. This came after the Cowboys shocked the Cincinnati Bengals 20-17 last week. In the win over the Giants, Rush completed 19 passes in 31 attempts for 235 yards and one touchdown. The Dallas TD was a highlight reel one-handed catch by Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb.

2) Aaron Rodgers beats Tom Brady.

In the most hyped game of the weekend, Aaron Rodgers, who has won the last two MVP awards, beat Tom Brady 14-12. With the win, the Packers are 2-1, while the Buccaneers drop to 2-1. Rodgers and Brady have combined for seven MVP Awards. Rodgers won in 2011, 2014, 2020, and 2021. Brady won in 2007, 2010, and 2017.

1) Jaguars deliver with second straight blowout upset.

It is time to recognize the Jacksonville Jaguars. One week after shocking the Indianapolis Colts 24-0 in a shutout, the Jags went into southern California this past week and pounded the Los Angeles Chargers 38-10. Lawrence completed 28 of 39 passes for 262 yards and three touchdowns, while running back James Robinson had 17 carries for 100 yards and another major score. Only winning three games last year, Jacksonville has already won two games this year.
