The first week one of the 2023 National Football League regular season is now complete. Here are the top five headlines.

5) Browns stop Burrow.

This past week Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals became the highest paid player in the National Football League. On Sunday, he was anything but effective. Just how bad was he? Burrow had a career low 82 yards passing as he had 17 incompletions in 31 attempts as the Bengals got spanked 24-3 to the Cleveland Browns. Burrow is now 1-5 in his career against Cleveland.

4) Dolphins explode offensively against the Chargers.

Miami’s offense was in full tilt against the Chargers on Sunday. Tua Tagovailoa had 466 passing yards and Tyreek Hill had 215 receiving yards as the Dolphins beat the Chargers 36-34. It is only the second time in NFL history that teammates had 450 yards passing and 200 yards receiving in a NFL opener according to ESPN. The first time, ironically two Dolphins accomplished the feat. On September 4, 1994, Dan Marino had 473 yards passing and Irving Fryar had 211 yards receiving as the Dolphins beat the New England Patriots 39-35.

3) J.K. Dobbins gone for the year with a torn Achilles.

Ravens running back J.K. Dobbins is done for the year with a torn Achilles. He suffered the injury in the Ravens’s 25-9 win over the Houston Texans on Sunday. Two years ago Dobbins missed the entire season with a torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament from an injury suffered in the preseason. Gus Edwards is now expected to be the Ravens top back, with Justice Hill and Melvin Gordon III in the mix. Remember, the Ravens offense is unique because quarterback Lamar Jackson runs a lot.

2) Cowboys deliver with biggest shutout in franchise history.

On Sunday night in New York, the Cowboys came through with a dominant 40-0 win over the New York Giants. It was the largest shutout in Cowboys history.  What was stunning about Dallas’s win is that Dak Prescott did not have one touchdown pass and only had 143 passing yards. Daniel Jones meanwhile looked awful. He had only 104 yards passing, two interceptions, and two fumbles, and was sacked seven times.

1) Aaron Rodgers done for the year.

The Jets’s biggest off season acquisition was only in the lineup for a brief period of time on Monday night before suffering a season-ending torn Achilles injury. Yikes!!! New York still beat Buffalo 22-16 in overtime. Jordan Whitehead had three interceptions, and Xavier Gipson became only the third player in NFL history to have a punt return for a touchdown in overtime. The other two players who have scored a touchdown from a punt return in OT are Tamarick Vanover of the Kansas City Chiefs on October 9, 1995 in a 29-23 Chiefs win over the San Diego Chargers and Patrick Peterson of the Arizona Cardinals on November 6, 2011 in a 19-13 Cardinals win over the St. Louis Rams.
