The final women’s major golf tournament of 2021 began on Thursday with the British Women’s Open from Carnoustie, Scotland. The best women’s golfer on the planet at the moment, Nelly Korda of the United States, is among three players tied for the lead at -5. The other two players in first place are Sei-young Kim of South Korea, and Madelene Sagstrom of Sweden.

This has been quite the summer for Korda. In June, she won her first major title of her career by winning the Women’s PGA Championship, and then earlier this month won the gold medal in women’s golf at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021. She is also comfortably the world number one in women’s golf. Korda has 75.31 more points than Jin Young Ko of South Korea, who is second place.

After the three-way tie for the top, there are 18 more golfers in contention. American Andrea Lee, England’s Georgia Hall, the Philippines’ Yuka Saso and Scottish amateur Louise Duncan are tied for fourth at -4, and only one stroke back.

There are then three tied for -3. This trio consists of Americans Lexi Thompson and Lizette Salas, and Spain’s Carlota Ciganda.

Meanwhile, 11 golfers are all bunched together at -2 and only three shots off the lead. This group contains Americans Mina Harigae, Yealimi Noh, and Brittany Altomore, Japan’s Nasa Hataoka and Hinako Shibuno, Mexico’s Gaby Lopez, Germany’s Leonie Harm, Switzerland’s Albane Valenzuela, Finland’s Sanna Nuutinen, Denmark’s Nanna Koerstz Madsen, and the great South Korean Inbee Park, who is a seven-time major champion.

This is the second time that the British Women’s Open has taken place at Carnoustie. In 2011, Yani Tseng of Taiwan was the champion.
