According to the British Broadcasting Corporation on Wednesday, three-time women’s grand slam semifinalist Johanna Konta retired at the age of 30. A native of Sydney, Australia, Konta moved to Great Britain as a teenager, became a British citizen in 2012, and competed for Great Britain as a professional.

Ranked as high as fourth in the world in 2017, Konta retired as the 113th ranked player in the world. She reached the 2016 Australian Open semifinal, the 2017 Wimbledon semifinal, and the 2019 French Open semifinal.

In 2016 in Melbourne, Konta lost 7-5, 6-2 to eventual 2016 Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber of Germany. What made Konta’s run to the semifinals down under five years ago significant is the fact she was unseeded.

In 2017 in Wimbledon, Konta was the sixth seed, and lost to Venus Williams of the United States, 6-4, 6-2. Then in 2019 at Roland Garros, Konta, the 26th seed, lost to Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic. 7-5, 7-6.

The 2021 tennis season was a rough one for Konta. She missed the 2020 Olympic Games in 2021 in Tokyo because she had coronavirus, and was forced to miss Wimbledon because she was in close contact with a person who had coronavirus.

Konta won four women’s singles titles in her career. Despite suffering from coronavirus in July, she had entered Wimbledon with significant momentum after defeating Shuai Zhang of China, 6-2, 6-1 in the final of Nottingham. Konta’s other three career wins came in the 2016 Stanford Classic where she beat Williams, 7-5, 5-7, 6-2, in the 2017 Sydney International where she beat Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, 6-4, 6-2, and the 2017 Miami Open where she beat Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, 6-4, 6-3.
