Three New York Giants retire

According to Jordan Raanan of ESPN on Wednesday, three New York Giants have announced their retirement over the last week. They are wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin of Belle Glade, Florida, offensive lineman Joe Looney of Lake Worth, Florida, and linebacker Todd Davis of Inglewood, California.
Of the three, Benjamin is the most notable name. He played four seasons in the National Football League from 2014 to 2018 with the Carolina Panthers, Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs. After not getting much playing time with the Chiefs in the 2018 NFL regular season, Benjamin left professional football altogether for two full seasons.
On May 16, Benjamin signed a one-year-contract with the Giants, and had tried out at tight end during the Giants’ mini-camp. However, after the Giants’ first official practice, Benjamin was cut. It is believed that during Benjamin’s short time in the Big Apple, he did not have a strong connection with New York head coach Joe Judge according to Tyler Sullivan of CBS Sports. Judge was reportedly not pleased that Benjamin arrived to camp overweight.
Benjamin had a marvelous start to his NFL career. In his rookie season, he had 73 catches for 1008 yards and nine touchdowns. Then in 2016, Benjamin had 63 catches for 941 yards and seven touchdowns.
In his NFL career, Benjamin had 209 catches for 3021 yards and 20 touchdowns in 61 career games. He also had an impressive 14.5 yards per catch. Injuries were a factor in Benjamin’s career. He tore his ACL and missed the entire 2015 season.

Looney of Lake Worth, Florida, played nine seasons and 104 games with the Dallas Cowboys, San Francisco 49ers and Tennessee Titans from 2012 to 2020. Meanwhile, Davis played seven seasons from 2014 to 2020 with the Denver Broncos, New Orleans Saints and Minnesota Vikings. In 96 career games, Davis had 505 combined tackles (315 solo tackles and 190 assisted tackles), 23 tackles for a loss, 12 quarterback hits, three sacks, one interception for 20 yards, one touchdown, 15 pass deflections, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries for one yard.
