The first two rounds of the 2025 United States Open are now complete and there are three Australians left in the draw. Let’s take a look at who they are.

Daria Kasatkina

Kasatkina is the 15th seed on the women’s side. So far she has beaten Elena-Gabriela Ruse of Romania 7-5, 6-1 in the first round, and Kamilla Rakhimova of Russia, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 in the second round. Kasatkina broke Ruse and Rakhimova eight times each.

Next up for Kasatkina is Japan’s Naomi Osaka, the four-time grand slam champion and the 23rd seed. Osaka won the United States Open in 2018 and 2020, and the Australian Open in 2019 and 2021. Osaka won their two prior meetings–6-3, 6-2 in the final of Indian Wells in 2018, and 6-3, 6-3 in the third round of Rome in 2024. In both of those meetings, Kasatkina represented her former country of Russia.

Priscilla Hon

Hon’s progression to the third round of the 2025 United States Open was eloquently discussed by my co-worker Isaac McIntyre on Friday. As a qualifier, she defeated Leolia Jeanjean of France 6-3, 7-5 in the first round, and stunned the 17th seed Liudmilla Samsonova of Russia, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the second round. The native of Brisbane has never played her third round opponent, Ann Li of the United States, before.

Hon is the only qualifier left in the women’s draw. There are five qualifiers left in the men’s draw. Jerome Kym of Switzerland, Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany, Ugo Blanchet of France, Leandro Riedi of Switzerland, and Coleman Wong of Hong Kong are in round three.

Alex de Minaur

de Minaur of Sydney, the eighth seed, beat fellow Australian Christopher O’Connell of Sydney, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in the first round, and then beat Japanese qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 in the second round. de Minaur had 10 aces against O’Connell, and broke Mochizuki seven times. Next up for de Minaur is Germany’s Daniel Altmaier. de Minaur won their only prior meeting, 6-1, 6-4, in the quarterfinals of Rotterdam this year.
