Texans trade DeShaun Watson to the Browns
4 years ago - Sportingbase
From a marketing perspective, the recent acquisition of DeShaun Watson by the Cleveland Browns may not be a positive one. We all know of Watson’s issues with the sexual assault and sexual misconduct allegations he is facing. Even though Watson has been cleared of criminal charges, he is facing 22 active civil suits where he is accused of several uncalled for acts including forcing women to perform oral sex, groping, and inappropriate touching, according to Aaron Reiss of the Athletic.
Watson’s legal issues were the reason why he did not play for the Houston Texans in 2021. As a result, the three-time Pro Bowl quarterback was left off the Texans roster for “non-injury reasons,” as the team committed to quarterback Davis Mills.

On Sunday, the Browns decided to take a chance on the troubling quarterback, and proceed with Watson. In addition to Watson, Cleveland receives a fifth round draft pick in the 2024 National Football League Draft for three first round draft picks in 2022, 2023, and 2024, a third round draft pick in 2023, and a fourth round draft pick in 2024 according to the Associated Press.
By proceeding with Watson, the Cleveland Browns will probably look to move their former number one quarterback in Baker Mayfield. Cleveland is also counting on significant chemistry between Watson and Amari Cooper, who they acquired via trade from the Dallas Cowboys on March 16. As a result of acquiring Watson and Cooper, the Browns have traded five draft picks overall.
The Browns will have to live their decision. They are in a win-mode now. Yes Watson is not facing any criminal charges for his actions, but from a moral perspective, the optics of this latest acquisition is indeed questionable.
