Tennis player Enrique Lopez Perez suspended eight years for match fixing

According to ESPN on Tuesday, Enrique Lopez Perez of Madrid, Spain has been banned for his participation in fixing tennis matches during the 2017 tennis season. At this time we are not sure at what tournaments Lopez Perez participated in the match-fixing, but we do know that three charges of match-fixing were proved by the Tennis Integrity Unit. According to Tennis World, Lopez Perez was also fined $25,000. The disciplinary case was heard by Canadian law professor Richard McLaren.

In 2017, the year in question, Lopez Perez did not reach the main draw in any events on the ATP Tour. He lost in qualifying for the ATP events in Doha, Sydney, the Australian Open, Montpellier, Marseille, Barcelona, Estoril, the ATP 1000 Masters Series event in Madrid, the French Open, and Wimbledon.

Lopez Perez did win six International Tennis Federation events in 2017. He defeated Zsombor Piros of Hungary, 6-3, 6-0, in the final of Budapest; Zdenek Kolar of the Czech Republic, 6-1, 6-1, in the final of Szekesfehervar, Hungary; Tomislav Brkic of Bosnia-Herzegovinia, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, in the final of Shymkent, Kazakhstan; Mario Vilella Martinez of Spain, 6-4, 6-3, and again, 6-4, 6-2, in separate finals of events in Cairo, Egypt; and Ivan Nedelko of Russia, 7-6, 6-1, in the final of Islamabad, Pakistan.

In 2017, Lopez Perez was ranked as high as 162nd in the world. However, he finished the year ranked 269th in the world. In the summer of 2018, Lopez Perez reached an ATP career-high of 154th in the world on two separate occasions. At the time of his suspension, Lopez Perez was ranked 367th in the world.
