Tedesco to end his career at Roosters with extra year

Sydney skipper James Tedesco has all but confirmed he’ll see out his rugby league career with the Roosters after agreeing to a one-year extension. The deal, set to run through 2026, will wrap up when he’s nearly 34.

The Australian and New South Wales fullback was already inked in for next season, but there hadn’t been any guarantee he’d play on into his fifteen top-flight season in the NRL.

The 31-year-old has been in fine form throughout 2024 – even though he lost his State of Origin jumper to Panthers No.1 Dylan Edwards midway through the year – and has now earned himself one more year with the tricolours: The Roosters captain, the Daily Telegraph has reported, has signed a long-awaited contract extension.

There were some questions about Tedesco’s longevity, but he’s already waved them away – both with his 2024 form and when he was questioned about his future in late October.

The Rooster then said he “doesn’t see the issue” with playing on and declared he’s up for the task.

“If things are dropping because of my age, I understand,” Tedesco said last month, “but after the year I just had at 31, I know what my body’s like, what my mentality is and my work rate. I’m not going to dip too much… that’s just how I am.”

Roosters coach Trent Robinson echoed Tedesco’s confidence today, telling media “he’ll start the same time [as last year] a few weeks before Christmas… he’s as focused, as driven as ever.”
