Team World wins 2023 Laver Cup

Team World has won the 2023 Laver Cup for the second straight year. After winning 13-8 over Team Europe in 2022 in London, England, the World Team defended their title Sunday in Vancouver, Canada, by a score of 13-2.

Team World was comprised of Americans Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafioe, Tommy Paul and Ben Shelton, Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime and Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo. The Canadian tennis fans were extremely happy by the fact that Auger-Aliassime defeated France’s Gael Monfils 6-4, 6-3 in Friday’s singles action. This was a match of grand slam semifinalists as Auger-Aliassime made the final four of the 2021 United States Open, and Monfils made the final four of the 2008 French Open and 2016 United States Open.

The Laver Cup also lacked interest because it did not include the top five players in the world. Missing included Novak Djokovic of Serbia, world number two Carlos Alcaraz of Spain, world number three Daniil Medvedev of Russia, world number four Holger Rune of Denmark and world number five Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece. Tennis legend John McEnroe also expressed his dissatisfaction that the Laver Cup took place at the same time as China’s Chengdu Open and Zhuhai Championship.

In order for the Laver Cup to be taken more seriously, the event needs to changed. They need to eliminate the unimportant post-tournament exhibition doubles match (took place on Sunday between American Christopher Eubanks and Canada’s Milos Raonic versus France’s Arthur Fils and Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina), make all matches worth the same number of points, and get rid of the super tiebreak which is used to replace the third set when players are tied at a set apiece.
