Team Europe selected for 2023 Ryder Cup

Team Europe has been selected for the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome, Italy. The team was announced by Ryder Cup team captain Luke Donald of Hemel Hempstead, England according to Paul Hodowanic of pgatour.com on Monday. The Ryder Cup takes place once every two years and features the best golfers from the United States against the best from Europe. This will be the first time the tournament will have taken place in Italy. The United States, which are the defending champions, have already selected their team.

Initially three players on Team Europe were chosen from the European points list. They were four-time major champion Rory McIlroy of Holywood, Northern Ireland, two-time major champion Jon Rahm of Barrika, Spain, and Robert MacIntyre of Oban, Scotland. McIlroy won the 2011 United States Open, the 2012 and 2014 PGA Championship, and the 2014 British Open. Rahm, meanwhile won the 2021 United States Open and 2023 Masters.

Three players were also chosen from the World Points List. They were 2023 FedEx Cup champion Viktor Hovland of Oslo, Norway, the 2022 United States Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick of Sheffield, England, and Tyrell Hatton of High Wycombe, England.

The other six golfers named to the team were picked by Donald. They were Ludvig Aberg of Eslov, Sweden, Tommy Fleetwood of Southport, England, Nicolai Hojgaard of Billund, Denmark, 2019 British Open champion Shane Lowry of Clara, Ireland, 2013 United States Open champion Justin Rose of London, England, and Sepp Straka of Vienna, Austria. Even though the Ryder Cup is taking place in Italy from September 29 to October 1, there are no Italian golfers on the squad.
