Taylan May forgoes brothers plan to re-sign with Panthers

Taylan May has decided to re-sign with the Penrith Panthers at the expense of a brotherly plan he, Terell, and Tyrone had cooked up where they would all end up at the same NRL club playing together.

May, 22, is expected to put the finishing touches on the contract with Penrith this week. This re-signing will see him stay a Panther until at least the end of the 2026 season.

There has been no end to talks about the May brothers since Terell, who is currently playing at the Sydney Roosters and is off-contract at the end of the year, declared the trio would play together at a new club “in a heartbeat” if the team in question was willing to pick up all three of them on similar-lengthed deals.

While there were some interested parties, most notably the Canterbury Bulldogs and St George Illawarra Dragons, the youngest May has instead decided to re-pledge his allegiance to the club he is already playing for.

The re-signing, which was first reported by Zac Bailey on Twitter, ends all those discussions.

May’s Panthers extension means all eyes will now turn to Terell and his Rooster talks. The Sporting Base has long been under the impression Terell will simply re-sign with Sydney for at least two more years—likely timed to end at the same time as Taylan’s new contract—though Chooks coach Trent Robinson wants him locked up for longer.

This also likely closes the door on Tyrone May’s return to the NRL. He last played for the Panthers but was deregistered over comments he made regarding his four charges of intentionally recording an intimate image without consent. The 27-year-old was fined $7,500 for posting about the incident on Instagram before he was eventually sacked.
