Stanislas Wawrinka headlines 15 players who are receiving wildcards at 2025 Australian Open

The organizers for the 2025 Australian Open made the announcement on Sunday who would receive wildcard entries for the first grand slam event of the year according to Rupam Shukla of Essentially Sports. The biggest name is Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka, a three-time grand slam champion.

Wawrinka, who is 39 years of age, won the 2014 Australian Open. There he beat the recently retired Rafael Nadal of Spain in the final, 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Wawrinka also won the 2015 French Open and 2016 United States Open.

There are six other male tennis players receiving a wildcard. Of the six are three Australians. They are Tristan Schoolkate of Perth, Li Tu of Adelaide, James McCabe of Sydney. Schoolkate won his first grand slam singles match of his career this past summer when he defeated Taro Daniel of Japan in five sets 4-6, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6. 6-4.

Meanwhile, the other three players receiving a wildcard are Kasidit Samrej of Thailand, Lucas Poulle of France and Nishesh Basavareddy of the United States. Pouille reached the semifinals of the Australian Open in 2019, and has won five career tournaments. He has won the 2016 Moselle Open, the 2017 Hungarian Open, 2017 Stuttgart Open, 2017 Vienna Open, and the 2018 Sud de France.

On the women’s side, eight players received wildcards. There are five Australians–Ajla Tomljanovic of Brisbane, Daria Saville of Melbourne, Maya Joint of Brisbane, Talia Gibson of Perth, and 16-year-old Emerson Jones of Gold Coast. Tomljanovic is a three-time grand slam quarterfinalist. Saville won the 2017 Connecticut Open where she beat Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia in the final, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Like Schoolkate, Joint won her first grand slam singles match at the 2024 United States Open. She beat Laura Siegemund of Germany in the final, 6-4, 7-5. Jones reached the Australian Open and Wimbledon Junior Final in 2024.

The other three women to receive a wildcard spot are Shuai Zhang of China, Iva Jovic of the United States, and Chloe Paquet of France. Paquet reached the third round of the 2024 French Open where she beat Diana Shnaider of Russia 6-3, 6-1 and 32nd seed Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic 3-6, 7-6, 7-6. Zhang reached the quarterfinals of the 2016 Australian Open, 2019 Wimbledon, and won three WTA titles. They were the 2013 and 2017 Gangzhou Open and the 2022 Lyon Open. Jokic won her first grand slam singles match. That came at the United States Open in the summer where she stunned 2023 Australian Open Magda Linette of Poland 6-4, 6-3.
