Spurs upset Thunder as Victor Wembanyama shines

The San Antonio Spurs are in the position of rebuilding and have a long ways to go before they put themselves in a spot to contend. However on Thursday, the Spurs showed flashes of brilliance and in the process delivered a significant upset. San Antonio, which entered the game at 11 wins and 48 losses, shocked the Oklahoma City Thunder 132-118. For the Thunder, they drop to 41 wins and 18 losses, and a full game back of the Minnesota Timberwolves in the Western Conference. The bottom line is not everyday you see the 15th seed in the Conference beat the second seed.
Spurs rookie center, Viktor Wembanyama, the 7’4″ giant who was the first overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, was one of two San Antonio Spurs with 28 points. The other was shooting guard Devin Vassell of Lawrenceville, Georgia.
Four more Spurs reached double digits in scoring. Power forward Jeremy Sochan of Guymon, Oklahoma had 21 points, point guard Tre Jones had 17 points, center Zach Collins of Las Vegas, Nevada had 13 points, and small forward Keldon Johnson of Chesterfield, Virginia had 10 points. The fact that Collins had 13 points is rather significant, as he made five of seven field goals and one shot from downtown in only 16 minutes of action in coming off the bench. So in all, the Spurs got 41 points from the center position alone.
This was San Antonio’s second win of the month of February. Their other win was significant as it came on February 12 in a 122-99 win over the Toronto Raptors. In that contest, Wembanyama had a eye-popping 10-block triple-double.
