Spain wins gold medal in men’s football at 2024 Olympics

For the second time ever, Spain has won the gold medal in men’s football at the Olympic Games. In the gold medal game of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris on Friday, Spain defeated France 5-3 in a very high scoring contest.

Spain had two players with two goals each. Midfielder Fermin Lopez of FC Barcelona of La Liga and forward Sergio Camello of Rayo Vallecano were the Spanish players who crossed the goal line with their respective shots on multiple occasions. Lopez scored in the 18th and 25th minutes, to tie the game at one and put Spain up 2-1. Camello then scored the game-winning goal in the 10th minute of extra time, and then a key insurance goal in the 121st minute. The only other Spanish goal scorer was Alex Baena of Roquetas de Mar in the 28th minute, which put Spain up 3-1 at the time.

One area where Spain snd France struggled were in their overall defensive play. There were a lot of scoring chances for both teams.

The bronze medal in football went to Morrocco. The win for Morocco was significant because it was the first time ever that Morocco won a medal in a team sport at the Olympic Games. Their 29 medals have either been in athletics or boxing. In the bronze medal game, Morocco clobbered Egypt 6-0. In Morocco’s last three wins, they outscored their opposition 13-0 as they beat Iraq 3-0 in Group Play, and the United States 4-0 in the quarterfinals.

On Saturday, the gold medal game in women’s soccer will take place. The United States is playing Brazil.
