Slater tipped for Maroons job
4 years ago - Sportingbase
NRL legend and former Melbourne Storm fullback, Billy Slater has been tipped for the vacant Maroons coaching job after Paul Green stepped down from the position.
Green made the decision on Tuesday, and it now means Queensland Rugby League is looking for a replacement and were hoping to attract 2020 coach Wayne Bennett.
It is believed the Maroons want a coach for the long-term and Green was unable to make this commitment as he plans to return to an NRL coaching job in the near future.
With the odds stacked against him and with his subsequent success in 2020, Bennett looked the favourable option as the six-time premiership winner is set to leave the South Sydney Rabbitohs at the end of the season.

Before Green was appointed for 2021, Slater was a frontrunner but lost out in the final stages.
Knowing Slater’s relationship with the Queensland players and his devotion to the team, it will be a no-brainer for the Maroons to select him.
Having played 31 games for his state, Slater is the eighth most capped Queenslander behind a host of State of Origin legends.
